Senator Charles Schumer (D-NY) is calling for the federal government to consider recalling e-cigarette batteries and devices that have shown to cause harm to their users in certain cases where fires and explosions were reported.

Schumer calls vapor products “ticking time bombs” and has cited a recent Associated Press (AP) story that says that the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has identified roughly 66 explosions involving vape devices in 2015 and in early 2016, according to Fox Business.

While the vapor product industry maintains that the cigarette alternatives sold are safe if handled properly, Schumer wants the FDA to determine why so many of these devices have been causing personal injury, and believes that there is proof enough that federal action is needed.
